CHRISTCHURCH MAYORALTY

MINORITY WIN BY MR MACFARLANE LEAD OF 1265 OVER MR MACGIBBON By a majority of 1265 on the preliminary vote. Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P. (Labour), defeated Mr W. S. iViacGibbon (Citizens) for the mayoralty of Christchurch. Mr J. N. Clarke (Independent) polled 4176, making the election of Mr Macfarlane a minority one. Although the dispute in the Citizens’ Association after Mr Clarke’s breakaway after failing to secure the mayoral nomination was widely discussed, the election campaign aroused little interest or enthusiasm even among strong party supporters. Many of the booths reported steady voting throughout the day, and there were no incidents at any of the polling places. ‘'Everything has run smoothly." reported the Returning Officer (Mr H. S. Feast) when the booths were closed at 7 p.m. Six minutes later, the Monck’s Bay booth again took the record of making the lirst return, which gave Mr MacGibbon a lead of 24 over Mr Macfarlane. The fourth return, from Innes roao. was a pointer to Mr Macfarlane’s success: it was from a booth in a locality which would have been expected to give Mr Mac Gibbon a good majority. His majority there was only five. With 37 booths counted, Mr Macfarlane had a lead of 789 over Mr MacGjbbon. with Mr Clarke already out of the contest, and with 58 booth returns in. Mr Macfarlane's lead had increased to 1667.

Merivale and Papanui gave Mr MacGibbon s supporters renewed hope and with 31 returns still to come. Mr Macfarlane's lead was reduced to 803 Ihe next few returns put Mr Macfarlane steadily ahead, and with four booths to come he had a lead of 887 r . etu L n ' Il om Aidwin’s road, added 141 to Mr Macfarlane’s majority- and the character of the localities . »7 st . th , ree booths left no doubt of Mr Macfarlane's success.
