ESCAPE OF OIL INTO HARBOUR
FINE OF £6O IMPOSED ON CAPTAIN
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND.'November 9. A charge of allowing oil to escape into the Auckland harbour was preferred against the master of the City of Edinburgh, Captain J. W. Wotherspoon, when he appealed before Mr W. S. Spence, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. The defendant pleaded guilty. Counsel for the Auckland Harbour Board said that oil was seen floating on the harbour on November 4. It was found to be coming from the City of Edinburgh. There was no suggestion that the act was deliberate. Several owners of small craft complained about the oil, and the Harbour Board had spent £3O in cleaning it up. The counsel for the defendant said that the occurrence was just the sheerest bad luck. Oil was being transferred from one tank to two others in the ship. The gauge on one of the tanks gave a wrong reading, and the tank overflowed. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £6O and ordered that the cost to the Harbour Board of cleaning up the oil be paid by the defendant.
