FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE POST OFFICE

Sir,—For the mothers of young children, Friday night is an important one. Shopping in the city for the fami'y has to be dealt with, and there is always a regular amount of mailing to be done. It is therefore most annoying to find that in the Chief Post Office, from 7.30 to 8 p.m. (when it closes) there is only one teller selling stamps. A long queue quickly forms and when the end of it is finally reached and the stamps obtained it is impossible to buy a postal note. These are sold only at the Hereford Street Post Office after 5.30 pm. What person, especially a young mother, has time for this double and tiresome journey’—Yours, etc., .. M.S. November 5, 1950. (The Chief Postmaster. Christchurch, says: “On Friday evenings stamps may be purchased at the registered letter counter and at the letter delivery counter, as well as at the stamps counter. A close check on the position indicates that there is, generally speaking, sufficient staff to cope with the business offering. Postal notes are available at the stamps counter on Friday evenings.’’]
