CHINESE NEAR LHASA
NEW DELHI, November 7. Advance units of Chinese-led Tibetan troops were to-night reported past Phondo Dzong. 45 miles from Lhasa, says Reuter’s correspondent in Kalimpong. Tibet’s new "Interim Government” has ordered the troops guarding Lhasa not to offer resistance, but to confine themselves to the maintenance of law and order. According to well-informed sources in Kalimpong, the Chinese-Tibetan forces will advance bevond Lhasa to Shigatse—the seat of the Panchen Llama—and only a token force will be stationed at Lhasa. DR MALAN UNDERGOES OPERATION CAPETOWN. November 8. Dr. D. F. Malan, Prime Minister of South Africa, underwent a successful operation yesterday at the Pretoria General Hospital. It is expected that Dr. Malan will be able to leave hospital in about a fortnight. Dr. Malan, who is 76, has been under the care of specialists for some time.
