BAPTIST UNION ASSEMBLY
CONCLUDING DAY The annual Assembly of the Baptist Union and Missionary Society of New Zealand was concluded yesterday. Outstanding union business, including the election of the executive of the union and the preparation of the budgets for the year 1950-51, was dealt with durA? day - In th ® evening “College Night was held at the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church. A report on Manurewa Home, the Baptist home in Auckland, was presented to the assembly by Mr N A. Reynolds, secretary of the college committee. He said that there were now 56 children at the home Concern was expressed at’the state of the finances of the home, and on the motion of Mr F. W. Horner the assembly agreed that the union finance committee should confer with the Home Board as to means for overcoming the deficit. A new church, the Henderson Baptist Church. Auckland, was accepted into membership of the union. The pastor of the church (the Rev A G Roke) was welcomed by the assembTy president (the Rev. J. A. Clifford). An interim board of Maori missions was appointed, with the Rev. T. R Page as convener. On the suggestion of the chairman ot the college committee (Mr F W Horner) it was decided to take steps to establish a permanent memorial to North - the former principal of the Baptist College, who died rece?uy /u The memorial is to be linked wiji the college. Sub-committees were appointed to raise funds in each province for the memorial. The following budgets were apP r h yed fo >' ’he 1950-51 year:—college. ijSSS’ eh'Jrch extension committee. £3709: union budget. £4965; youth department. £1039. The executive officers of the council of the Baptist Union were elected as follows:—ex officio: the president. Mr E. R. Clark (Christchurch), immediate past president, the Rev. E. W Batts <Dunedin), oresident-elect. the Rev L A. North (Wellington), and the general secretary, the Rev P F Lanvnn (Wellington). Elected: Messrs ’w Carey I Wellington), F. W. Horner (Hawera), E. Nees (Wellington), the Revs. A. L. Silcock (Gisborne) J E Simpson (Napier), and N. R.'Wood (Hastings). At the conclusion of the assembly business Mr Ernest Brown, the English Baptist leader, who has been attending the assembly at the invitation of the union, and Mrs Brown spoke on their impressions of the assemblv MiBrown said the word he would choose to describe the union was "virile.” New Ministers Introduced Three new ministers were introduced and spoke brieflv to the large crowd which attended college night the concluding function ot the as: sembly, last evening. They were the Rev. L. S. Armstrong, the" Rev. R. E Bullen, and the Rev. I. S. Kemn Mr Ernest Brown spoke on "What sort of a Man a Minister Should Be ' He said a minister should, above ail be a winner of souls. His message to tne new ministers would be- “Mv brothers love your people, love the Gospel, live the faith.” said Mr Brown.
