CENTENNIAL AT KAIAPOI
START OF TWO WEEKS OF CELEBRATIONS
Kaiapoi’s centennial celebrations opened this week with an exhibition of early photographs and other records in the public library. Films are being shown, and a river carnival, fire brigade display, swimming carnival, and procession will be held during the two weeks Kaiapoi will be celebrating the provincial centenary. The procession, which is expected to compare favourably with any seen so far. will take place on Saturday morning. and will provide a colourful cavalcade of Canterbury during its first 100 years of settlement. There will also be novelty floats, marching girls’ teams and a Maori display and float.
Vintage motor cars and early types of horse-drawn vehicles such as Cobb’s Coach, and old and modern farm machinery will parade. The procession will go to Park Oval and be on view there during the day. During Saturday afternoon an extensive programme of entertainment and pageants will be presented in the park. The route of the procession has been decorated with coloured lights, floral work and greenery. Old Scholars’ Re-union The centennial celebrations will be attended by more than 600 old scholars of Kaiapoi school, who will be present from all parts of New Zealand—and as far afield as New York. A full programme of entertainment has been set down and a banquet will be held in the railway goods shed on Saturday evening.
