EVENTS MAY FAVOUR DEMOCRATS

NEW YORK, November 5. Three eleventh-hour factors in the Congresaional election campaign could have a momentous bearing' on the po’itieal future of the United States and the world, says a “New York Time,? report from Washington to-day They are (1) the attempt on President Truman’s life by two Puerto Rican revolutionists, (2) the sudden reverses of the United States and United Nations forces in Korea, and (3) Mr Trumtan's ,ingle major campaign speech. The chief political correspondent ot the “New York Times” said that the full impact of these events on .Tuesday’s voting would never be known, but they were being weighed by analysts and politicians. Mr Truman's audience in St. Louis last night was acutely aware of the peril he had escaped, and of his philosophic calm and courage in the assassination attemnt. This, combination of pride and gratitude might have a political effect which would extend in some degree to the vast circle of radio listeners and television spectators -throughout the United States. “The Democrats are very hopeful that this effect will add many votes to their candidates,” says the correspondent. “The Republicans are fearful that this hope may have a good basis.' ' Mr Truman had left campaign oratory to thp Vice-President (Senator Alben Barkley) and others. His "frankly nartlsan” address came late. The Republicans, Mr Harold Stassen and Senator Robert Taft, had quickly followed the President on radio and television to challenge every point. “The Democrat campaign managers are more hopeful than the Republicans of the voting conseouences of this speech-making.” says the correspondent. “The Democrats believe that the recent steady successes of the United Nations forces in Korea have persuaded many critics of America s FSr Eastern policy to change their
