SECOND DAY OF- C.J.C. MEETING

Canterbury Cup Easily Won By Beaumaris

PIERRE AND NED KELLY OTHER MAIN WINNERS

Beaumaris, a firm favourite, proved much superior to his opponents at weight for-age in the Canterbury Cup,-one of the principal races on the second day of the New Zealand Cup meeting at Ricearton yesterday, Mr J. S. Shaw's champion closely trailed the New Zealand Derby winner, The Vnicorn, to the straight, galloped to the front near the furlong and won easily by three lengths. He was followed home by The Unicom, which beat Felicitous, the «nly other three-year-old in the field, by two lengths.

Beaumaris has now won 12 races and £ 19,586 in stakes.

Pierre showed characteristic finishing speed to win the Fendalton Handicap from little-fancied candidates in The Rip and Arctotis. Trained at Trentham by W. Hawthorne for Mr C. J. McFarland, Pierre fibs scored some of his most important successes at Ricearton. His win yesterday was his tenth, and his stake earnings now total £8955.

The Fendalton Handicap was the first leg 'of the day’s double and Pierre was second favourite, carrying 3090 tickets in a pool of £B5ll 10s. The second leg of the double was the Jockey Club Handicap which Ned Kelly won narrowly from the top weight, Voltaic. Tickets redeemed on the Ned Kelly-Robinfaye bracket totalled 220. The Pierre-Ned Kelly combination returned £63 19s for £l.

Beaumaris was given an ovation on returning to the birdcage after the Canterbury Cup, the race in which he was sensationally beaten last year by Bhutan. C. T? Wilson always had him in close touch with the leaders, and interest in the result of the race as far as the winner was concerned ceased a furlong out The first half mile was run in 54 2-5, but the pace then quickened and ’ the fifst mile was covered in 1.44 3-5. The last half mile took 48 1-5, which could have been bettered if any of the other runners had been capable of extending Beaumaris. The weather was fine and the track was in excellent order. There was a moderate attendance but the totalisator handled £110.852 10s against 105.129 10s on the second day, a Saturday, last year. The second day of last year’s meeting was held in showery weather though the track was little affected. The Unicom displaced Jamell in front near the seven furlongs, Beaumaris being close in attendance. Five furlongs from home, x’he Unicom was a length in front of Beaumaris, with three-quarters of a length to Jamell, half a Ungth to Felicitous, a length to Golden Amber and Super Snipe, then Royal Tan. Beaumaris drew up to The Unicom soon after straightening up, and he had the race won at the furlong. Felicitous was two lengths tn front of Jamell. fourth, and Sifper Snipe wrs two lengths further back, fifth. Royal Tan was sixth, well clear of Golden Amber, and there was a big gap to Raving Robin. Finance Wins Again Finance won the Port Cooper Highweight Handicap just as decisively as he won the Suburban High-weight on the first day. Confidently ridden by K. Nuttall, the Finis four-year-old finished strongly in the straight, and he could have widened his winning margin of han i length from Pageant. Bren Gun lost several lengths at barrier rise, and Man o’ Kent was also s’ow. Kirkella led past the mile and a quarter from Beau Esprit, which was followed by Beau Soir, Highway, Finance and Pageant, Debden. Home Circle, and All Pockets.
