VICEREGAL The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Freybergi and Lady Freyberi; took up residence at “Darcsbury," 67 Fendalton road, yesterday afternoon.
Sir James Hight celebrated his eightieth birthday at his home in Chrisichurch yesterday. Throughout the day he received cablegrams and telegrams of congratulation from university associates, former students and friends in many places. A group ot flitends arranged a surprise party last evening and presented a gift. The Rev. O. R. Banbury has been appointed chaplain to Medbury School ™ B anbu . r -V, Who was ordained in 1947. has since that time been assistant curate in Fendalton parish. He expects to take over his new duties at the beginning of next year. Mr H. Brown, warehouse manager of the Vacuum Oil Company. Ltd. Christchurch, was presented with the (tumpany's 40-year service emblem at a staff function held at the head office m Wellington on Thursday. Mr Brown joined the company at Wellington in November. 1910, and is the second member of the New Zealand staff to complete 40 years of service. Mr p. M. Thomson, secretary of the United Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen’s Association of New Zealand, has left Christchurch for Melbourne to attend a meeting of secretaries of commercial travellers’ associations in Australia.
