BROWNTOP A NEWCOMER

It is rather surprising to recall that browntop. unfortunately a prominent feature of many Plains farms which have not been well treated, is relatively a newcomer in some districts. A Malvern farmer recalled last week that the first he saw of it in the district between Hororata and West Melton was a patch on the roadside near his homestead. He recalls it clearly, because the thoroughbred mare he used for hacking about the farm objected strohgly to the patch in wet weather. The grass took on the shine that it does when light rain or dew is on it in the morning, and the mare made a point of playing up at the patch by the gate. That was only a little more than 20 years ego. When he was asked what took the place of browntop when light land in the district was allowed to run down, he said that old man twitch was one of the most common weeds, but that all sorts of rubbish very soon found a foothold.
