FRIESIAN HERD’S PERFORMANCE

One of the most remarkable performances ever recorded by any dairy herd on twice-a-day milking anywhere in the world was that of the Lelburne oedigrep Friesian stud at Menzies’ Ferry. Southland, during the 1949-50 season. Owned by A. end R. Udy. the stud was tested under Government official herd test, the final returns for which show the phenomenal average of 14.7011 b milk and 567.71 b fat in 291 days for the 16 cows which completed lactations during the season. One other cow was also milked but as she did not calve until J-nuary. and is being carried through into the present season. her figures will be included in the next average. The 16 cows tested included two junior two-year-olds, three senior two-year-olds. five three-year-olds, two four-year-olds, and only four mature cows, and the range of the returns '■ecured was from 3571 b to 8411 b fat. Three members of the herd created new breed records for their age under G.O.H.T.—a mature cow at 841.81 b in 305 days, a' senior three-year-old at 693.81b.in 305 days, and a junior three-year-old at 623.41 b in 277 days.
