SHEPPARD MAKES 117 IN FIRST GAME (Rec. 8 p.m.) PERTH. October 15. The Cambridge University batsman, D. S. Sheppard, scored the first century of the English cricket tour of Australia, against Northam and District yesterday. He also scored the first run of the tour and hit the first four. Sheppard, who opened the innings with R. T. Simnson, scored his first 50 with ones and twos and an occasional

four. Then he opened his shoulders and raced to 100 with 10 fours, in 158 minutes, after which he went to great pains to throw his wicket away. W. G. Parkhouse, who followed Simpson won immediate recognition by hitting two beautiful fours io square leg and long-on. He knows all the strokes and used them in scoring 50 in 84 minutes. He was 85 when Sheppard reached his century. He added a single then snicked a ball to the wicket-keeper, Brew. Parkhouse batted 118 minutes and hit 11 fours. D. C. S. Compton evidently was not in the niood. and went for seven. A. J, Mclntyre batted attractively for JI and J. G. Dewes stubbornly for 38 not out. On the resumption of play after England’s declaration, J. J. Warr bowled K. Doherty for a duck in his first over. D. V. P. Wright also bowled well in dismissing two early batsmen, and F.
