Mr Churchill Hits At Socialism

(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 14. A scathing attack on Socialists was made by Mr Churchill, addressing the Conservative Party conference at Blackpool to-day. He described as rubbish Socialist claims to be a bulwark" against Communism.

“Communism is a great menace to the world,” he said. “The danger here is that Socialism is clearing the way for a Communist advance,” Mr Churchill said.

At the next election, Mr Churchill claimed, the Communists would fight side by side with the Socialists. As a matter of fact, they were very good helpers to them. Whenever a labour dispute, or trouble, occurred, all Socialists need say was “the Communists did it.” Mr Churchill told the conference that the recent United Nations successes in Korea “must not lull us into a sense of false security. What happened in Korea set world peace on a stronger foundation. ,

"There may be time to build up a European army with strong aid from Britain, the United States, and Canada. “The Soviet onslaught upon South Korea made many people realise the perils which menace us, and all that is left of European civilisation,” he said. “We may all rejoice at the favourable turn the war has taken in Korea. We are glad the British forces have been represented with those of other Commonwealth countries. We admire the skilful conduct of the campaign by that great soldier, General MacArthur. . “We must hope that the forces of the free peoples of the world will not become too 'deeply involved in the Far East because the dangers there are on a very small scale compared with those which tower up against us on the Continent of Europe.” Mr Churchill added: "I do not believe that war is inevitable. On the contrary I believe that hopes of reaching a peaceful settlement with Russia have been improved by what happened in Korea.” Five thousand packed the hall to hear Mr Churchill. Another 2000 heard him at an overflow meeting. Winding up the conference, the party chairman. Lord Woolton, said that if the Conservatives were returned at the next election they would stand by the Empire. “We shall not depart from the principle of Empire preference and our determination to aid the mutual prosperity of all countries of the Empire by making such arrangements among ourselves as seem best fitted to suit our conditions.”
