SPRING MEETING AT TRENTHAM

Ballochmyle Wins Brilliantly MAIN HANDICAP TO RENOWNED

The Dunedin owner, Mr A. N. Smith, was unlucky not to win two of the main handicaps on the first day of the Wellington Racing. Club r s spring meeting at Trentham on Saturday. His powerful Balloch gelding, Ballochmyle, won the Wainui Handicap like a champion, finishing brilliantly under his big weight of 9-13. Mr Smith’s stayer, Coral Arc, failed by only a neck to win the Wellington Handicap, a race he had won two years ago. Coral Arc did well to finish so close as he did to the winner, Renowned, as he was badly checked in the running, and received a gash on a leg. Renowned, which ?s raced by Mr R. J. Murphy, a steward of the Wellington Racing Club, was lightly supported for the Wellington Handicap, which marked her first success for the season. She made up ground quickly between the straight entrance the furlong, and after reaching the front she had a lead long enough to keep her in front of the fast-finish-ing Coral Arc, which was closing the gap to her with every stride. A feature of the racing was the phenomenal finishing burst of speed produced by The Unicorn to beat Ptolemy in the last stride in the Shorts Handicap. It was a pleasing Wellington Guineas trial on the part of The Unicorn, which, with a little over two furlongs to run, was about eight lengths behind the leaders, Lord Moss and Swayup. The Unicorn was the second favourite on the win and place and doubles totalisators. Of the 842 tickets invested on Renowned, winner of the first leg of the double, 125 were redeejned on The Unicorn, the dividend being £282 6s for £l. F. Smith, Takanini, who trains The Unicorn for Mr W. S. Goosman, had a success as an owner in the Desert Gold Stakes. The race was won in clear-cut style by Smith’s Foxbridge filly, Zenith, which was the leader for the last half mile. Wandering Ways, a hot favourite, was beaten over a furlong from home and finished a moderate third. The programme was run in ideal weather and the track was firm. There was a large attendance. The totalisator turnover was £224,258. Including £21,227 on the double, as against £164,887 on the first day of the spring meeting last year. Wellington Handicap

Renowned had 11 horses in front of her at the half mile in the Wellington Handicap and she maintained a solid run to master Langham and Akbar inside the furlong and keep clear of the fast-finish-ing Coral Arc, which just caught Lang-

Clyde Bridge ran to the front in the first furlong, and led out of the straight from Beau Or, Count Bian, Robin’s Reward, Biassed, Lord Azure, Akbar, and Golden Spa, Gay Fellow, Earldale, and Kippo being the tail-enders. Biassed, the third favourite, was put out of the race, 4? r^ er> J- G. Dulleu, breaking both stirrup leathers. In dropping back through the field Biassed checked Coral Arc.

Racing to the seven furlongs Clyde Bridge opened up a lead of five lengths from Beau Or, Lord Manna, and Lord Azure, which were followed by Count Bian, Golden Spa, and the top-weight Beaumaris, which had been forced to cover extra ground after starting wide out. The Laird and Akbar were following Beaumaris at that stage, and Renowned was about five places further back. Clyde Bridge held a short lead at the half mile from Lord Manna, Beau Or, Beaumaris, Akbar, Birdman, Langham, Golden Spa, Count Bian, Robin’s Reward, Coral Arc, and Renowned. At that stage Beaumaris was being pushed along by L. J. Ellis to hold his position. Clyde Bridge led round the home turn by a length from Lord Manna, Beau Or, Langham. The Laird, BeaumariE, Coral Arc, Golden Spa, and Earldale. At the furlong Clvde Bridge had faded out. A JS? a £ and L®ngham being left in front witiLßenowned challenging and Beaumaris failing to make any impression. Coral Arc was also closing the gap to the leaders. Renowned <ot the better of Langham inside the furlong and lasted to beat the fast-finishing Coral Arc by a neck, Langham being only a nose back third. The tiring Akbar was fourth ahead of Mission. Count Bian. Beau-Or, and Earldale. Beaumaris finished ninth. Shorts Handicap Ptolemy was in front with a furlong Jo run in the Shorts Handicap, but a brilliant late challenge from The Unicorn beat him into second place, a head olds 1 * 11 ” 8 theae two Bmart three-year-Peer Gynt lost several lengths at the barrier rise, and Lord Moss quickly joined Swayup in front. Lord Moss and Swayup were followed after three furlongs by Sun Treasure, Ptolemy, Dark Courage, and Apex. Joining the course proper Lord Moss was half a length in front of Swayup, and then there was a gap to Ptolemy, which was followed by Finola, Apex, Air Belle, Johnny Peep, Dark Courage, and The Unicom. Swayup soon ffided, and Ptolemy ran past Lord Moss near the distance, opening up a lead of a., length. The others were three lengths back headed by Air Belle, Dark Courage, and The Unicorn. With a brilliant burst of speed The Unicom got up to beat Ptolemy in the last stride. They had the finish to themselves, Dark Courage, third, being three lengths back. Lord Moss was fourth, and was followed home by Livre d’Or. Air Belle, Sun Treasure, and Trafalgar Day. Wainui Handicap Ballochmyle ran the best race of his career when he carried 9-13 to a decisive win in the Wainui Handicap. He was slow away and was well out of his ground in the run to the straight, but he finished brilliantly to win by a neck from Signify, which was also galloping strongly over the final stages. Field Marshal, Sonata, Calibrate, and Ballochmyle were slow away. Super Snipe being the early leader, and soon being displaced by Felicitous. Resolute ran to the front at the six furlongs and led past the half mile by a length from Arcara, Felicitous, Gollen, Aquelio, Voltaic, Veine d’Or, Tudor Prince, Pierre, Super Snipe, and Royal Crown. Resolute was followed into the straight by Arcara, Diana Reynard, Gollen, Voltaic, Veine d’Or, Tudor Prince, Calibrate, and Blue Spec, with Signify improving her position wide out. Ballochmyle came fast on the scene near the furlong and maintained his run to beat Signify, Resolute being a close third. It was a great finish. Royal Bouquet, Voltaic, Calibrate, Veine d’Or, Arcara, and Jolly Sailor being close behind Resolute. Desert Gold Stakes The Desert Gold Stakes marked the end of the winning sequence of five races established by Wandering Ways. The race was easily won by Zenith, Sierra beating- Wandering Ways fof second. Lady Palm was chopped back at the barrier rise, and Pheroz Girl was the early leader. After a furlong Sierra was in front from Zenith, Flotilla, Wandering Ways, and Pheroz Girl. Flotilla lost her position near the five furlongs and checked Fair Magic, which nearly fell. Zenith led past the half mile by a length and a half from Wandering Ways and Sierra, they being followed by Admiral’s Choice, Lady Palm, Flotilla, iPheroz Girl, Subject, Eastern Queen, Impulsive, Merry Flight, Naturally, and Lucky Lynn, Zenith led into the straight and she won unchallenged. Sierra was five lengths back second and half a length in front of Wandering Ways, which was beaten early in the run home. The others, headed by Pheroz Girl, wfere beaten off.
