SUPERANNUATION
Sir,—When, in my previous letter, I stated that I thought Mr Holland had been misinformed on the matter, I should have said that he had apparently not been fully informed of the position by the Superannuation Board. As “National Superannuitant” no doubt knows, the Superannuation Act is administered by a board, a body of men who appear to have little sympathy for superannuitants. However, there is a clause in the Superannuation Act which gives the Minister of Finance an over-riding authority, and, he could, if he so wished, by a stroke of the pen, give superannuitants what they are asking for and thus place them on the same footing as other members of the community so far as cost of living is concerned. Regarding social security tax, I would advise “National Superannuitant” to deal with first things first and not cloud the issue by bringing social security into the controversy.—Yours, etc., SUPERANNUITANT NO. 3. October 14, 1950.
Sir, —If “National Superannuitant” is a member of the National Party as his nom-de-plume implies, I would suggest that he endeavours to get the National Government to right the wrong that was inflicted on many railway men when they were retired long before their time during the 1931-32 depression with less superannuation than they would have received had they beep allowed to complete their full term. Since then these men have had to exist on greatly reduced incomes, which cannot be compared with the wages and salaries paid in recent years to Government employees who will consequently receive an increase in superannuation when they retire.— Yours, etc., WIFE OF SUPERANNUITANT. October 14, 1950.
