REARMAMENT OF JAPAN
AUSTRALIAN OPPOSITION NEW YORK, September 18. Australia would resist any attempt to give Japan the right to rearm hetself, said the Australian Minister of External Affairs (Mr P. C. Spender), commenting on a Washington report that the United States was pressing fo * a speedy Japanese peace trfegty. Mr Spender continued: “Australia has made it clear in respect to the Japanese peace treaty that one of the essentials it will seek is a safeguard jFan 1 resurgence of a militaristic “In a nation which was so close to invasion as Australia was, and which was saved by its own efforts and those of the United States, we are not likely to approve of any course of action which would not prevent such a thing happening again.’ r
