TIMARU-CHRISTCHURCH ROAD RACE

E. G. LAMBERT MAKES FASTEST TIME

The Timaru to Christchurch cycle road race for amateur riders held on Saturday was won by C. E. Bishop, who from the 23min mark covered the distance in 4hrs 24min 41sec. The Auckland rider, E. G. Lambert, who represented New Zealand at the Empire Games, gained fastest time from the scratch mark, doing the 100-odd miles in 4hrs 6min 46sec alter a hard tussle over the last part with S. J. Taylor (Canterbury) and another Auckland rider, C. W. Shilton. • Bishop and W. Seiwood, both Ca iterbury riders, kept in the same bunch of riders for most of the journey, and over the last part Bishop went away to score a decisive win from Seiwood, with White (Canterbury) third and R. Maguigan, West Coast, riding off the half-minute mark, made fastest time in the Canterbury 50-mile centennial cycling championship race ’at Rangiora on Saturday. His time was 2hr lOmin 30 l-ssec. T. Layton, who started from the 30min mark, won in 2hr 32min 6 l-ssec. F. Johnston, the limit rider, took second place, and D. Swanston came third. Next* came J. Sutherland,. D. Clarke, A. Howison, and F. Chapman, in that order. Chapman made second fastest time—2hr lOmin 56sec. Fastest time by a junior rider was returned by O. Duffy, who covered the distance in 2hr 13min.
