DIAMOND HARBOUR BURGESSES

The executive committee of the Diamond Harbour Burgesses’ Association at a meeting last week decided to ask Mrs Irene Gilmour to represent the association as a candidate for the Lyttelton Borough Council at the municipal elections. Mrs Gilmour is a member of the present council. The meeting received a letter from the Lyttelton Borough Council suggesting the formation of a committee. which would consist of two members of the council, to assist with the maintenance and beautifying of the reserves at Diamond Harbour. The committee decided to offer all assistance and to form the committee as soon as the reserves were gazetted.

The assistance of the council in sponsoring the building of a community centre as a war memorial is to be sought by the association, and a deputation was appointed to place the claims before the council.

The association has entered a float in the Lyttelton centennial procession, and the council has been asked to reserve parking space at Lyttelton on December 16 for the cars of Diamond Harbour residents.

Flower Show at Diamond Harbour The annual spring flower show, organised by the Diamond » Harbour-Purau branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, was held in the Diamond Harbour School on Saturday. Mrs H. Blackler and Mrs E. L. Harvey judged the cut flowers and Mrs G. T. Smith and Miss M. Lindsay the decorative section. The judges commented on the high standard of the exhibits, particularly in the decorative section. . Mrs I. Gilmour declared the show open and presented trophies as follows:—decorative (section A): Mrs D. G. Pritchett (29 points) 1, Mrs A. Paine (16 points) 2, Mrs A. Jackson (9 points) 3. Section C: Mrs J. Hunter (11 points) 1, Mrs Hall (3 points) 3. Children: Robert Werren 1, Lloyd Jones 2, and Burelle Paine 1. Adrienne Buchanan 2.

Cut Flowers.—Premier bloom: Mrs J. Hunter. Most outstanding exhibit: Mrs Pritchett. Open class: Mrs Pritchett (26 points) 1, Mrs J. Hunter and Mrs Olliver (each 10 points) 2; Mrs Hall (9 points) 4.

Lyttelton Football Club Members of under-weight, teams of the Lyttelton Football Club were entertained by the club at a picture afternoon on Saturday. Mr W. Geayley, president of the club, presented trophies for the most improved players as follows:—sst 71b team, R. Woods and B. Silcock; 6st 71b team, E. Veal and K. Auld. Lyttelton Bowling Club The Lyttelton Bowling Club opened the season on the new rubber green on Saturday afternoon, a large number of members and visiting bowlers attending. Including Mr V. J. Rose, president of the Christchurch Bowling Centre. In declaring the season open the president, Mr L. Stanley, said that the club had, for many years. endeavoured unsuccessfully to maintain a grass green. The rubber green had cost £5OO. but the club opened the season in a good financial position. The Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs) presented trophies won during the season and declared the season open. Master Bryce Stanley rolled the kitty and Mrs Stanley* delivered the first bowl.
