BOYS’ HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP

N.Z. SIDE WINS IN AUSTRALIA

(N.Z.P.A. —Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, September 7. The New Zealand schoolboys’ hockey team yesterday won the Australian schoolboys’ championship when they beat the New South Wales No. 1 team, 3-1. The New Zealanders throughout played clever hockey, showing penetration and excellent ball control. Goals were scored for the winners by D. Watts (2) and R. Calklin.

The New Zealand boys will leave for home by the Wanganella 'to-day. The New South Wales Hockey Association is expected to decide to send a team to tour New Zealand in Aug-ust-September next year.

Mr W. Rothwell, past president of the New South Wales Hockey Association, who with Mr L. H. Norton, of New Zealand, refereed the first match between the Australian and New Zealand teams in 1922, said to-day that the visit of the New Zealand boys had created a favourable impression. The New Zealand team contained much promising material, particularly Watts, Crossen, Hobson, Abrams, and Evans, who would make names for themselves in hockey in the future. A silver trophy, entitled the KiwiWaratah Cup, has been given by Mr Rothwell, Mr E. G. Foskett, and Mr O. P. Wood (past presidents of the New South Wales Association), and Messrs W. Williamson and L. H. Norton, of New Zealand, to commemorate the winning of the championship.
