OTAGO HUNT

SAN QUENTIN MAY WIN STEEPLES Wandering Minstrel, Sparkling Lad and San Quentin, wnich raced prominently at the Grand National meeting at Riccarton, are the early favourites for the Otago Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase, two miles and a half, the principal event at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting at Wingatui to-mor-row. Wandering Minstrel, the surprise winner of the Enfield Hack Steeplechase on the first day, is the only Riccarton-trained candidate in the field. His chances will not be heightened by a greasy track, but he should race well if the going is either heavy or firm. Sparkling Lad won the Hunt Cup Steeples at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting, his splendid jumping and stamina playing a big part in his success. He was a mihor placegetter in his two races at the Grand National meeting. He is a double acceptor, and may be reserved for the Irwin Steeplechase. San Quentin finished second to Specialist in the Hunt Cup on the second day of the Grand National meeting. Sparkling Lad being a long way back third. San Quentin his not much pace, but he 13 a reliable jumper and stays well. Libdllula and Irish Pal, the latter being bracketed with Turora, appeal most of the others. If the track* is firm Jamell will be favourite for the Tally-Ho Handicap. This grand galloper has benefited from hls racing at the Grand National meeting, and If he races up to his best form he should have a most successful season. Strongest opposition for Jamell may come froin Detract and Super Flight, which raced well, if without winning, at Riccarton l»»t month. Super Flight takes time to work up to her top speed, but if she is reasonably well placed at the straight entrance her powerful finishing run may carry het Into a place. The second leg of the double is ths Vauxhall Handicap, for which Diablo may be favourite. This Siegfried four-year-old made his last appearance in the Longbeach Hack Handicap at Riccarton, finishing third after being near the tail.oi the field'- with half a mile to run. The Riccarton-trpined Hobgoblin will be well supported on the strength of his fourti! in the Redcliffs Hack Handicap at Riccarton. A likely light-weight is Roving Robin, whose training tasks at Wingatui have been attractive. Others with good form credentials are All Hurry, Home Circle, and Fille d’Honneur. Selections are:— 11 a.m.—Seaview Hack and Hunters' Hurdles: Sal’s Pal, Lord Robin, Dundonaid. 11.55 a.m.—Trial Stakes: Bob's Emerald Chief, Man o’ Kent.
