Mr Harold Smedley, M.8.E., who ha s been assistant secretary at the office i of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in Wellington for the last two years, is soon to return to London. Mr and Mrs Smedley will leave Wellington on September 14 for i Me.bourne. Mr R. G. Chisholm, of the Commonwealth Relations Office who has been appointed to succeed Mr Smedley, is not expected to reach Wel- ; lington unt 1 November. Kinsman was yesterdayelected Deputy-Mayor of Timaru at a meeting of the Timaru City Council. He is the senior councillor, having been a member of the City Council (previously the Borough Council) for 14 years and a half. He succeeds Mr w. Richards, who was elected Mayor (FO O h ß) death ° f Mr A ’ E S ’ Hana «- The president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association (Mr S Howard Hunter) was met at afternoon tea yesterday by the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. Mr Hunter returned to Wellington last evening. Messrs C. Day and F. L. Langley have been re-elected unopposed as president and secretary respectively of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Union. The secretary of the National Coun- 1 cil of Churches (the Rev. A. A. Brash) will attend the annual meeting of the' I National Missionary Counc’l in WelI lington to-day. The council co-ordin-1 • ctes the missionary departments of all 1 churches other than the Romm Catholic. Its expenditure for the year in mission work overseas is £152,900. Mr H.
