MANAGING DIRECTOR TO RETIRE CHANGES IN EXECUTIVE STAFF (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 6. Mr J. N. Greenland, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, will retire at the end of this month. The company announced to-day that Mr Greenland would be succeeded as managing director by Mr M. B. Miller, the present general manager. As from October 1, Mr H. H. Dobie, assistantgeneral manager, will become general manager; Mr A. N. Leslie, assistantgeneral manager, will become deputygeneral manager; and Mr F. K. McFarlane, controller of accounts, will oecome assistant-general manager. Mr Greenland was born in Westport in 1887. He joined the Union Company’s staff in the Westport office in 1902. He transierred to the purser staff in 1904, and served in most of the company’s trades. He served with the Wellington Mounted Rifles in Gallipoli and Palestine until 1919, when he was invalided home. In 1920, Mr Greenland served in the trans-snipmeni department of the company’s Wellington branch. He was appointed sub-manager of the Lyttelton branch in 1921. Subsequently he was sub-manager at Timaru from 1926 to 1929. His next appointments were in Christchurch and Auckland. In 1936, after only six months as assistarit-general manager, Mr Greenland became general manager. In 1939, he was appointed to the board of directors.’ He became managing director in 1945. Mr Greenland will remain a member of the directorate.

New Managing Director Mr Miller was born in Wellington. He joined the company at Dunedin (then the head office) in 1908. He was for two years on the purser staff. In 1915, he joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. In July, 1919, Mr Miller rejoined the Dunedin branch, but was transferred to the head office as private secretary to the late Sir Charles Holdsworth, i|ien managing director. In 1924, Mr Miller became examiner of operating costs at the head office, and served on relieving duties in several branches. He was posted to the management staff in 1925, and became chief assistant to the management. In 1936, Mr Miller was appointed assistant-general manager. He became general manager of the company in 1945 He has been a member of the beard of directors for five years. The company’s new general manager, Mr Dobie, joined the staff as a junior at Invercargill in 1914. In 1918 he went to Timaru as chief clerk. In 1927, he was appointed branch manager at Blenheim, and was successively branch manager at Timaru, Dunedin, and Christchurch. In 1944, after several years in Christchurch, he was apto, tlle head office management staff, and became assistant-general manager in 1945.
