EROSION WORK AT SMITHFIELD

SUBSIDY APPROVED BY CABINET From Our Own Reporter

TIMARU. September 6. Approval had been given by Cabinet to the agreement covering the scheme to combat erosion at Smithfield. said the country clerk (Mr G. B. Bird) at a meeting of the Levels County Council to-day. The agreement with the Minister’s signature attached should be in the hands of the council soon. The agreement provided for a subsidy of 20 per cent, of the cost of the scheme, with a maximum of £lO.OOO. said Mr Bird. He suggested that as it would be some time before the final details of the agreement were completed, tenders should be called this week. Application would have to be made to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to raise the loan to meet the special rating area’s cost of the work, he said. It was decided to call tenders for the work immediately.
