MAIDEN PACERS AT WASHDYKE

TWO GOOD PERFORMANCES . 1 1 Imperial Lord and Secret Mission i botn gave solid performances to win ] the First and Second Fairview Han- ‘ dicaps, the events for maiden pacers, . at tne Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Tuesday. ' Filament attempted to lead all the way in the First Fairview Handicap, ; but Imperial Lord got up to beat her by a nose in an exciting finish. Prince Charming, Sure Wood, Irish Orator. Raceaway, Bonnie Opal, and Loyal Girl all made mistakes in the first furlong. Filament began quickly, and when the field settled down she was leading from Major Gaillard, Colleague, Esquire, and Imperial Lord, which were racing in Indian file. The order remained much the same for more than a mile. Filament was first into the straight for the sprint home, with Major Gaillard, Colleague, Imperial Lord, and Esquire, the only other horses with a chance. Once C. King let Imperial Lord stretch out, he finished on particularly well to win narrowly. A goodlooking chestnut horse. Imperial Lord is by Gamble from the Rey de Oro mare, Imperial Gold, which left other winners, including Imperial Lady to the same sire, and Gold Bar and Crown Plate to Grattan Loyal. Filament’s effort to finish second was above the average. She should soon win a race for Mr W. Hicks, for whom she is trained at Waimate by M. J. Smith. - . A five-year-old mare. Filament is by Springfield Globe from Margaret Chenault, which took a record of 3min 23 4-ssec at the pacing gait. Bred at Ladbrooks by Mr A. Slee, Margaret Chenault is also the dam of Alice Dawson. Wade Lane. Schooldress. and Peggydale. Major Gaillard, which was placed in four races last season, gave an encouraging display to finish third. One of P. G. Gallagher’s Washdyke team. Major Gaillard should soon win a race for Mr J. Craig. Second Fairview Handicap After racing handy to the leaders for most of the way. Secret Mission finished strongly to win the Second Fairview Handicap by three lengths from Red Chase, which was unlucky at the start. Main Force was the early pacemaker. At the end of half a mile he was followed by Secret Mission. Jack’s Mistake, Dillon View, Super Villa, Sergeant Major, and Venetian. After taking the lead with three furlongs to go. Secret Mission was not troubled to carry on and win from Red Chase, which was followed by Super Villa and Tiki Napu. A four-year-old gelding. Secret Mission, which is trained at Yaldhurst by R. J. Berry for Mr J. N. Scott, is by Grattan Loyal frorp Judith, which left ' winners in Cold Steel to Rey de Oro, and His Excellency to Jack Potts. Bred at Hawarden by Mr O. T. Evans, ’• Judith is by Author Dillon from Nerissa, by Cathedral Chimes from Taruna Mary, by Antonio from a mare by Young Irvington. ; On this form, Secret Mission should > soon win again for Mr Scott. ; The second favourite, Red Chase, was , badly drawn at the barrier, and he had ■ to start from the second line. A quick ■ beginner, he moved off smartly, but was immediately checked by the horses in front of him, •and he went to a break. , By the time he settled down. Red Chase " was giving away starts of up to 48 yards. At the end of the first two furlongs, Red ’ Chase had 10 horses in front of him, : but he set out after the leaders, and with seven furlongs to go he was follow- , ing Main Force, Secret Mission. Esperanto. ' and April Star. After being third into the , straight for the sprint home. Red Chase ; did well to earn the second prize of £4O 1 for Mr O. J. Watson, who bred him.

An attractive four-year-old chestnut horse, Red Chase is by Light Brigade from Rosewood, by Gamble from Peggy Wood, which left a fine performer in Lady Ngaio (4min 17 3-ssec) to the same sire. Bred at Christchurch by A. F. C. Rushton, Peggy Wood is by Parkwood from Mary Wood, by Wildwood Junr. from a Viking mare. Red Chase is one of the most promising young pacers seen out for some time.
