HUGE DAMAGES CLAIM
SUIT BROUGHT BY U.S. GOVERNMENT SEQUEL TO COLLISION AT SEA (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, August 28. The United States Government to-day filed a 14,000,000 dollar damage suit as a result of the sinking of the hospital ship Benevolence on the night of August 25. The suit was directed against the Luckenbach Steamship Lines, owners of the Mary Luckenbach, the freighter involved in the collision. The Benevolence sank with the loss of at least 18 lives.
The government alleged that the captain of the freighter was guilty of careless, reckless, and negligent navigation and operation. One of the nine counts alleged that his ship was travelling at an excessive speed. Divers to-daV explored the wreckage of the Benevolence.
Thirteen persons are still unaccounted for, pending a final check by the Navy. Those saved numbered 492.
