FREEING JAPANESE WAR CRIMINALS
RUSSIAN NOTE BLAMES GENERAL MACARTHUR
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, August 28. A Note accusing General MacArthur of exceeding his prerogatives in supporting the early release of Japanese war criminals was handed to the United States Department of State in Washington on Friday, according to a Tass message received in London.
The Soviet news agency said that the Note repeated the previous Soviet protest against General MacArthur’s directive on the ground that it constituted an attempt to establish the practice of releasing, on General MacArthur’s personal orders, major Japanese war criminals sentenced by the International Military Tribunal in Tokyo before they had served their term of imprisonment. The Note said that the existence of practice of pre-term release in other countries did not justify General MacArthur’s unilateral action, and it insisted that the United States Government take immediate measures to rescind General MacArthur’s “unlawful” directive. which violated agreed upon decisions concerning Jaoan.
, The previous Soviet protest was lodged on May 11 and the United states rejected it on June 8.
