BASKETBALL

JOAN YOUNG CUP CANTERBURY BEATS OTAGO Giving a fine all round exhibition, the Canterbury senior basketball team, which won the Nev/ Zealand Championship Cup at Palmerston North, beat Otago in the annual fixture for the Joan Young Cup, by 28 goals to 10 in a game played at South Hagley Park yesterday afternoon. Canterbury, which has won all its interprovincial fixtures convincingly, again displayed excellent teamwork, and the winning margin of 18 goals gave a fair indication of the difference between the two teams.

The Otago team, which had offered stern opposition at Palmerston North, was, however, far from disgraced, and in the second half particularly, fought hard for control of the game. For Canterbury the defence third showed exceptional strength. Because of the repeated and brilliant inteiceptions of,B. Newey, E. Newey and N. Tregonning, the ball rarely reached the Otago goal. N. Nicholls was the outstanding player for Otago, and J. Stewart (centre) and A. Tyler (defence) worked strenuously. The teams were:—

Otago.—E. Armstrong, P. Harvey, N. Nicholls, C. Pearson, J. Stewart (captain), D. Weir, D. Neutze, A. Tyler, M. Wilson.

Canterbury.—J. Murray, A. Hughes, L. Watson, D. Turner (captain), D. Hughes. J. Fuller, E. Newey, B. Newey, N. Tregonning.

Canterbury opened very strongly, and by swift, keen passing was seven goals up within the first few minutes. The goals were scored mainly because of some accurate shooting by L. Watson, who was given every opportunity to score from openings made by J. Murray and A. Hughes. Otago endeavoured to retaliate, but the Canterbury team, playing with greater dash and deliberation, finished with a half-time lead of 18-5.

In the second spell, play was more even, with Otago attacking strongly. As the game progressed the effects of strenuous tournament play became more evident, but Canterbury held to win comfortably.
