IMPORTATION OF BANANAS
Sir. —Would you please tell me why the two ships which bring bananas both go to Auckland? I suppose there is an explanation for this, though no one south of Cook Strait seems to know.—Yours, etc., HOUSEWIFE. August 28, 1950. [Mr H. E. Radley, a Christchurch fruit auctioneer, said yesterday that the Matua had always been on the Auckland-Fiji and Auckland-Samoa service. It was expected that the Union Steam Ship Company would have a new vessel, the Tofua, in service next year, bringing bananas from the islands to Wellington and Lyttelton. The Maui Pomare, which was Govern-ment-owned, had been built originally to bring bananas to the South Island, but after the last World War it had been transferred to the AucklandRarotonga service, taking oranges, tomatoes, and passengers. As a result of representations made to the Minister of Island Territories (Mr F. W. Doidge) it was expected that the Maui Pomare would make a trip to Lyttelton from Samoa with bananas in October, and another early next year.]
