GUESTS OF WESTPORT JOCKEY CLUB
Mr and Mrs J. W. Jennings, Upper Riccarton, will oe special guests of the Westport Jockey Club at its meeting on September 9 and 11.
During a long and successful career as a jockey. Mr Jennings rode many winners on the West Coast, and he also met with success as a trainer.
He rede two winners. Pickaninny and All Gold, at the Westport meeting 25 years ago, and the following year he won one of the main races at the meeting on a galloper from his own team. Prince Ferouz. At that meeting, V. A. Lee, now a well-known trainer at Riccarton. rode seven winners.
Prince Ferouz was one of the four Greymouth Cup winners ridden by Jennings, the others being Miner al. Semper Paratus. and Thorndale. Minerval later
won the Auckland Cup. Jennings rode many winners at Riccarton. He had three successes in the Great Autumn Handicap—on Black Duke, Princess Argosy, and Queen of Song He w?s also on Queen of Song when she won the We’lington Cup. He was riding until he was well in his fifties, and h ; s retirement was hastened by injuries suffered in a race fall.
