NEWS VALUES
~ Sir,—Your readers should appreciate tne difficulty of sorting out the numerous news, and deciding its place and size of type in the paper. I feel I must congratulate you this week on giving big type to Mr Nehru and his ideas, the back page to-day to Mr Menzies, and a whole column on the cable page of criticism of Mr Churchill’s “dreams” (as the “New Statesman” calls them) of a European army. Why can’t old men go to sleep? But is it right to call the “New Statesman and Nation” a Left Wing paper, as the cable does? I should say its views represent the Right Wing, not the Left Wing, of the Labour Party, if that is the bird in question.—,-Yours, etc., J.J. August 23, 1950.
