POTATOES FOR AUSTRALIA
SURPLUS STOCKS IN SOUTH ISLAND
MR HOLLAND’S TALKS WITH MR MENZIES (From Our Parliamentary Reporter./ WELLINGTON, August 22. The difficulties in, the way of the export of Surplus potatoes from the South Island to Australia may soon be overcome, according to the Prime Minister (Mr Holland). The export of New Zealand potatoes was one of the subjects he discussed with the Australian Prime Minister; (Mr R. G. Menzies) to-day. . “The position is that Australia is short of potatoes and New Zealand has a surplus of 7000 tons,” said Mr Holland this evening. “They are good potatoes, and we have the shipping available, but there are certain technical problems which have arisen from Australia’s long-felt anxiety about the danger of crop diseases being brought into the country with imported potatoes. “I feel that as a result of my discussions with Mr Menzies all these difficulties are now surmountable,” said Mr Holland. “I hope that they will be completely overcome soon after his return to Australia.”
