WEST GERMANY’S REFUGEES

LADY TWEEDSMUIR SPEAKS AT STRASBOURG
(Rec. 8 p.m.) August 19. Lady Tweedsmuir, a Conservative member of the British Parliament, today urged Western Europe to work tlosely with the British Dominions in solving the refugee problem in Western Germany.
Lady Tweedsmuir addressed the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe as deputy for Mr Winston Churchill during the Assembly’s discussion of social problems. The Assembly is meeting in Strasbourg. “The overseas areas linked to our countries can provide opportunities for these migrants,” Lady Tweedsmuir said. "Canada Australia. New Zealand and South Airica are lands particularly well suited. We cannot afford to allow these areas to lie empty.” Lady Tweedsmuir said the Russian sweep down Eastern Europe had caused "the migration of the appalling figure of 14,000,000 to 15.000,C00 persons.” She estimated that about 2.000.000 persons had died during the migration, and that between 8,000,000 and 9,000.000 were now in the Western zones of Germany. “Most of these people have fought for freedom behind the Iron Curtain, and. I think those who have struggled for us in the East should be welcome in the West.” she added
