ONE MAN KILLED, THREE INJURED
TRUCK RUNS INTO DITCH (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 20. One man was killed and three were injured when a truck ran into a ditch on the Thames-Auckland highway last evening. The man who was killed was:— George Teed Muir, aged 27 single, a carpenter, of Waitakaruru. ’ The men injured were George FulA r li_ a . driver, of Waitakaruru: Arthur Heaton Mason, a builder, of Waitakaruru, and the employer of Muir; Reginald Thomas Higgins, of Waitakaruru. The truck was extensively damaged. Muir came to New Zealand from Scotland in 1948. He has no relatives in New Zealand. His fiancee is due to arrive in New Zealand next month.
MOTORCYCLIST’S DEATH
CRASH INTO BACK OF TRUCK
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 19. A motor-cyclist died from injuries and the condition of a pillion rider is only fair after an accident at Ellerslie to-day in which the machine they were riding crashed into the back of a truck.
The man who died was: Laddie Munro, about 20, of Papakura military camp, a son of Mr J. J. Munro, of Mangapehi.
The pillion rider, Travers King, of Weymouth, about 20. whom Munro had offered a ride without having known him previously, has been admitted to the Green Lane Hospital with concussion and scalp lacerations. The- traffic stream in which Munro was moving towards the Ellerslie racecourse stopped suddenly at about 10.20 a.m. on the Great South road, and the motor-cycle crashed into the rack of the tray of a half-ton truck. The two men on the motor-cycle were thrown m to the middle of the road. BOY’S DEATH
DRAGGED BY HORSE (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 20. A boy was killed after being dragged by a horse yesterday at Matakana Island. He was:— Matakerewhana McMillan, aged 9, a son of the late Mr T. McMillan, of Matakana.
The boy was leading the horse on a long rope tied about his waist. It is thought that when he went to open a gate the horse bolted. He died almost immediately.
MAN KNOCKED OFF BICYCLE
Alexander Hill, of 127 Lyttelton street, was knocked off his bicycle by a motor-car at the corner of Worcester and Barbadoes streets about 8 p.m. on Saturday. He was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital with head and shoulder injuries. His condition last evening was reported as satisfactory. baby Injured • The four and a half months old daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Reardon of Puketa, Kaikoura, suffered facial injuries and shock, when she was thrown from a pram after being struck by a car, travelling on the Main South road about half a mile from the Ministry of Works camp, Puketa, about 3.45 p.m. on Saturday. The pram was being wheeled along the side of the road by two girls when a motor-car which was travelling in the same direction collided with it. The girl’s condition last evening was reported as being satisfactory.
man knocked down BY CAR
John Buchanan, of the Salvation Army Horne. Poulson street, was knocked down by a motor-car at the corner of Moorhouse" avenue and Madras street-about 7.55 p.m. yesterday. He suffered head injuries. His condition last evening was reported as satisfactory.
