FIRE IN AUCKLAND SHOP

OUTBREAK IN STOREROOM (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 20. A fire which started in a small storeroom under a stairway at the back of a basement floor at the shop of Woolworths (New Zealand), Ltd., in Queen street this morning damaged a quantity of children’s and women’s clothing and general merchandise. An electric iron connected to a light socket which was inadvertently turned on when some of the lights in the building were switched on caused the outbreak. The damage is not yet estimated.

WOMAN RESCUED FROM BURNING HUT

SERIOUS INJURIES SUFFERED (New Zealand Press Association) LEVIN, August 19. A woman who was rescued from a .blazing hut in Saxon street this morning was rushed to the Palmerston North Hospital . suffering from extensive burns. She was Mrs Hilo Tihema, aged about 35, wife of Rau Tihema. of Waitarere road. Levin. Her condition soon after admission was reported to be serious. Mrs Tihema was asleep in a bed in the hut when fire broke out. A neighbour, Sidney Mudgway, succeeded in getting her out of the hut before the brigade arrived. The hut was ablaze when the brigade arrived and was demolished.
