CANTERBURY WINS N.Z. SHIELD

MANAWATU BEATEN BY ONE GOAL “The Press’' Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH, Aug. 20. Manawatu, holder of the New Zealand Hockey Shield for two years, lost to Canterbury on Saturday by a one-goal margin after a terrific struggle in which the issue remained in doubt up to the final whistle. Played in brilliant weather on a fast and even ground, the game, always spectacular, produced brilliant patches of hockey mingled with the mediocre.

Maintaining a territorial advantage for the greater part of the game, Manawatu was on the day unlucky not to gain a draw, and had the forwards had the fini-h of their Canterbury counterparts the shield would have undoubtedly remained with the defenders. The Manawatu forwards had a feast of the ball throughout the game, but could not penetrate the solid Canterbury defence.

Had Manawatu retained the shield, the credit for doing so would have fallen on the shoulders of the centre-half, B. Turner, who overshadowed his opposite, R. Peacock, with an amazing amount of work both on attack and defence. In the Manawatu goal, L. Hart had an excellent day and was given no chance with the one goal that was scored against him. Outstanding for Canterbury was the Indian player, W. Hanna, who was the engineering force behind all of his side’s attacks, and he scored the only goal of the match. Another forward in the southern team to shine was the inside-left, 1. Smith, who was especially dangerous in the circle. M. Down, full-back, broke up many Manawatu attacks, and H. R. Rhind made some brilliant clearances in the Canterbury goal. Canterbury’s goal came towards the end of the first spell from a penalty cornet. The ball bounced off Hart’s hand and Hanna, following in fast, hooked it while it was in the air into the goal-mouth. REPRESENTATIVE MATCH AT TIMARU An under 15 grade representative team from Christchurch travelled to Timaru on Saturday and played a match against South Canterbury. The Canterbury team won by 5 goals to 2.

WOMEN’S DOMINION TOURNEY

MATCHES FOR K CUP AND MILLS CUP Twenty-eight teams paraded at Hagley Park on Saturday for the opening of the 1950 New Zealand women’s hockey tournament. Led by the Christchurch Ladies’ Highland Pipe Band, the teams made a colourful display as they marched round the ground and assembled before the dais where the president of the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association (Miss E. Beattie) welcomed the players from all parts of the Dominion. The Mayor (Sir Ernest Andrews) opened the tournament and welcomed the visiting players to the city. The Mayoress (Mrs Hardy-Cookson) and Miss Poulter, honorary secretary of the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association, also spoke. In an endeavour to preserve the grounds at Hagley Park, four games were transferred to outside parks, two at Elmwood and two at Somerfield, but if fine weather prevails the rest of the games will be played at Hagley Park. Twelve teams were entered for the K Cup competition and 16 in the Mills Cup competition for minor associations. The teams were drawn in sections of six, and each team will play the other teams in the same section. On Friday, semi-finals of the minor association will be played, and on Saturday the finals of both competitions. Results in the first round were:— K CUP Section A.—Eastern Southland 2, Rangltikei 1; Canterbury B 7, Waikato 1; Wellington 4, Auckland Country 0. Section B.—Auckland Town 6, Otago 3; Wellington B 3, Ashburton 1; Canterbury A 6, Wairarapa 1. MILLS CUP Section A.—Buller 5, North Otago 2; Wairarapa 5, Horowhenua 1; CanterburyMalvern B 3, South Otago 2. Section B.—Eastern 6, Marlborough 0; South Canterbury 10, Ashburton 2; Bush, a bye. Section C.—Canterbury 1, Maniototo 1; Canterbury-Malvern A 7, Southland 0; West Coast, a bye. Matches for K Cup Eastern Southland v. Rangitikel.—Eastern Southland, a inner of the K Cup of last year’s tournament, had a hard tussle to beat Rangitikei, which played a hard vigorous game and bustled its opponent right through the game. The Eastern Southland forwards attacked early, and N. Christie scored, but Rangitikei equalised, J. Patterson scoring just before half-time. The second spell was fast and even, and N. Jones scored the only goal of the spell to make the final score: Eastern 2, Rangitikei 1. , Canterbury B v. Waikato.—Solid defence by the Waikato custodian kept the goal intact when Canterbury made determined efforts to score. The Canterbury forwards were not combining well, and Waikato rushed play to the home team’s goal, and L. Maisey scored—the only goal of the spell. After the interval, Canterbury settled down and played excellently. The forwards attacked as a unit and completely demoralised the Waikato defence, and towards the end three goals were scored in as many minutes, Canterbuw winning by 6 goals, scored by M. Rouse (3), S. King (2), and M. Down, to 1, scored by L. Maisey. Wellington v. Auckland Country.—The Auckland backs made the mistake of playing too far back sjnd left too much ground for the fast Wellington forwards to work up attacks. Wellington’s goal was seldom threatened, as the Wellington forwards pressed, hard almost throughout the game. Wellington won by 4 goals to O, the scorers being J. Webster (2) and D. Gray and M. McMurray. Auckland Town v. Otago.—The first half was very even and play ranged from end to end. Auckland, opened the score when Robinson nicked up a pass from P. Batty. Brownlie broke away for Otago and centred for McGregor to equalise. P. Batty and E. Brownlie were prominent in a passing movement that ended in Brownlie’s scoring. A penalty bully in Auckland’s goal was won by Popplewell, putting Otago well in the lead. P. Hendry stopped several Auckland raids, and Robinson broke through to score. The half-time score was: Otago 3, Auckland 2. Otago tired visibly in the second half and Auckland had the better of the play. Robinson scored twice in quick succession and towards the close of the game D. Buchan scored two more goals, making the final score: Auckland Town 6, Otago 3. Wellington B v. Ashburton.—Although Wellington B secured a 3-1 victory over Ashburton, the game was fast and even, with J. Dixon tipping the scales in favour of Wellington by magnificent circle play and scoring all three of Wellington's goals. Ashburton’s forwards lacked the thrust of the more experienced Wellington team, and D. Cromie scored its only goal. Canterbury A v. Wairarapa.—A strong Canterbury side attacked immediately against a young Wairarapa team. The forwards played a short passing game, and their team worK, was outstanding. M. Donaldson, inside left, opened Canterbury’s score with a neat shot, her interception at the edge of the circle finding both backs out of position. She also scored Canterbury’s second goal in the first spell. In the second spell Wairarapa allowed too much depth between forwards and halves, and halves and backs. When Canterbury wings made a run, they were left with several alternative openings for their centring shots. From such runs N. Wilson was able to add two goals and D. Mouat another before Wairarapa opened its score. Wairarapa’s centre forward tested the Canterbury goalkeeper with a hard shot, which the goalkeeper had time only to deflect to the left, and the centre forward scored from the rebound. Canterbury attacked immediately from the bully, and P. Calder, inside right, scored. The game finished strongly, the final score being: Canterbury 6, Wairarapa 1.
