U.N. APPEAL FOR CHILDREN

£2OOO RAISED IN FIRST FOUR WEEKS The United Nations Appeal for Children attained only a small part of its Canterbury quota of £60,000 during the first four weeks of its two-month campaign. The appeal was opened on July 2, and in the first four weeks, ended on Friday, £2139 16s Id was received from the Christchurch city area. The full Canterbury amount for the first four weeks will be greater than this, but the figures are not available. “Contributions are expected to be greater during the month of August,” says a statement issued by the Christchurch committee yesterday. “In addition to the receiving depots already establi hed in the larger post offices throughout the city and in the Christchurch City Council office, a circular letter, with donation slips enclosed, has been forwarded to the principal firms and organisations in the Christchurch area and to the area committees in the country districts.” The letter emphasises the fact that if every employee gave one day’s pay, if every farmer gave an amount equal to one day’s production, and if every businessman or woman gave one 365th of his or her income, twice the target of £69,000 for the Canterbury district would be received, says the statement In addition to these means, various social and sporting functions have been arrahged to help raise the money.
