To Abdicate

BRUSSELS, July 31.
From “an unchallengeable source” it is reported that King Leopold will agree to abdicate, says the British United Press. The Belgian Prime Minister (Mr Jean Duvieusart) and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Justice went to see King Leopold to-day after a dramatic two-hour Cabinet meeting. It was rumoured that the Government would resign. The Cabinet met at 2 a.m. as the Socialists threatened an immediate civil war unless the Government agreed to compromise on the demands for the abdication of King Leopold. Three people were shot and killed last night in demonstrations against the King. The Ministers who went to see the King are known to represent his staunchest supporters. It is understood from a reliable source that a Minister went to ask King Leopold to make his own decision regarding abdication. A majority of the Cabinet is understood to favour abdication, but some Ministers think that such a decision can be made only by King Leopold.
