WAIMAKARIRI PROTECTIVE WORKS

Sir, —I had no intentions of writing again on the Waimakariri protection works, but after inspecting Goat Island (which every member of the Catchment Board should do) I just had to write. In. 1926 I introduced stocking of such islands with goats and then sheep. Finally, we were carrying 500 ewes, the turnover from them paying all expenses and keeping the islands clear. Alas, one day orders came that all stock was to be sold, for reasons 1 will not mention. For tbe board to think that it can force the river through this point is absolutely ridiculous. This island has grown in every way, being feet above the adjoining land. I agree that Kaiapoi and Belfast will have to look to their own safety just through lack ot maintenance. As for the flood being* the largest, this is definitely wrong. I can record four higher.—Yours, etc., T. JEAL. June 27, 1950.
