ADDINGTON MARKET

FAT SHEEP PRICES SOAR WETHERS MAKE 99/1 Fat sheep prices reached their highest levels for two years during the early stages of the stock market at Addington yesterday. Wethers sold on a number of occasions at more than 90s, with the top price 99s Id. With more sheep coming to hand, the market later steadied considerably and at the end of the sale values were 10s lower than at the start. Ewes met a strong sale and recovered the drop of three to four shillings of last week. . There were very few fat lambs, and these were four or five shillings dearer. Store lambs were firmer by two to three shillings, and ewes showed an average rise of one shilling. Fat catle, though in smaller numbers; met a slack sale except for the best quality. Best beef was about £1 dearer. STORE SHEEP The entry of store sheep was made up of 468 lambs, 507 ewes, and 259 wethers, a total of 1234 against 2661 last week. The offering was typical of a mid-winter sale, and consisted mainly of small lots of ordinary quality. The lambs attracted much better competition than they have in the last few weeks, and were 2s to 3s a head dearer. Top price was 46s 6d, and the whole yarding made from 34s 6d to, that price. Among the ewes were one or two useful pens, but the whole offering met better competition, and on an average was Is a head above last week’s rates. Two pens of sound-mouthed halfbreds in lamb to Down rams made 45s and 45s 6d, and medium to good lots made 34s 6d to 425, with a pen of old and shabby ewes at’ 255. Good wethers made 52s to 60s, and ordinary from 32s to 40s. FAT LAMBS The yarding of fat lambs was only 355, compared with 966 last week and 2820 the week before, and they were not. a specially choice lot. The smallness of the entry stimulated the market sharply and everything was cleared at values which were four to five shillings better than last week for similar quality. The top price was 74s Id for one lamb from S. Henderson (Irwell), and eight from D. D. Stewart (Lagmhor) sold at 70s Id. The best of the yarding made from 60s Id to 74s Id. good 50s Id to 59s 7d. and medium and light 39s Id to 49s 7d. The main sales were:— New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency sold: —account of D. D. When the sale began. the offering looked exceptionally small, and bidding over the early stages was excited, with 90s being paid regularly for wethers, and 60s for ewes. Later, more sheep arrived and prices for wethers came back very sharply. Over the last race, wether prices were fully 10s a head below the levels established early in the day, when values were higher than at anv time since the peak of the winter before last. Butchers’ ewes sold well throughout the day, and fully recovered the drop of 3s to 4s recorded last week. Light freezing type ewes were only fractionally firmer than they were last week. Among the quotable lines were 17 Shorthorn steer calves at £7 6s, 14 AberdeenAngus heifer calves at £4 16s, 21 at £4 9s, eight 20-months Shorthorn steers, well grown and in forward order, at £l3 Is. 12 forward Aberdeen-Angus and Hereford heifers of the same age at £9 3s 6d, 9 three and a half-year Aberdeen-Angus steers in forward order at £l7 16s, and seven empty Aberdeen-Angus cows at £7 13s 6d. Included in the entry was a fair proportion of over-fat types, which were difficult to sell at satisfactory prices. Choppers were in medium supply, but values showed little change. In the bacon section the yarding consisted of only eight pigs. Competition was keen and values wer? approximately 5s to 6s a’ head dearer. Values were:— Light porkers, £3 17s 6d to £4 7s 6d.
