SHIP DISABLED OFF PICTON
TOWED INTO PORT BY FISHING LAUNCH (New Zealand Press Association) BLENHEIM, May 30. Bound from Wellington to Nelson, the 210-ton motor-vessel Motu limped into Picton Harbour on one engine this morning, assisted by a Picton fishing launch which took the ship in tow off Oyster Bay, in Tory Channel, when both its engines went out of commission. The Motu left Wellington at 9.45 p.m. yesterday with 125 tons of general cargo for Nelson. Engine trouble developed in Cook Strait about midnight and the master, Captain S. A. Jones, decided to run for Picton. After a slow passage the Tory Channel entrance was made on a falling tide. The fishing launch was sighted at 6.30 a.m. and was signalled to pull alongside. When it arrived the Motu’s second engine was also out of commission. A towrope was taken aboard the 39foot launch, which is powered by a 52 h.p. Diesel engine, and the 15-mile tow to Picton began. After five miles, however, the Motu’s second engine came back into commission and considerably lightened the fishing boat’s task. The Motu berthed at Picton shortly after 10 a.m. The full extent of the repairs is as yet unknown.
