N.Z. MEAT PRICE IN BRITAIN
OVERALL INCREASE PREDICTED
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 30. As a result of the present negotiations between New Zealand and the United Kingdom over the price of meat, it was probable that there would be an overall increase. At the same time a decrease in the value □f ewe mutton might take place, said Mr J. E. D. Roberts, of Middlemarch, in a report at the annual conference of the meat and wool section of the B’ederated Farmers of Otago to-day. Mr Roberts said that the meat trade in Britain was advocating a return to private buying instead of bulk purchases because there was now a world shortage of meat amounting to only 4 per cent. Consumers in the United Kingdom now received 1901 b of meat a year, compared with 701 b before the war. These factors might have an influence on prices and the method of purchase. At the start of the present season New Zealand lamb commanded the highest premium in the world, but now the values seemed to be out if step with world prices, he said. Other countries had received greater increases in price.
