CYCLIST KILLED

STRUCK BY MOTOR VEHICLE

When the bicycle he was riding along the Main South road, near Hornby, was involved in a collision with a motor vehicle last evening a man was killed. He was:

Harry Ernest Smith, aged 22, married, of Hei Hei road, Hornby.

The motor vehicle which struck Mr Smith has not yet been located. It is believed to be damaged in front. Mr Smith was found on the road by a passer-by and was dead when the police arrived. The accident was reported to the police about 8.45 p.m.

MAN SUFFERS FATAL INJURIES

An inquest was opened yesterday, before the Coroner (Mr Raymond Ferner), into the death of John Houston Clarkson, aged 38, of 15 Hargood street, Woolston, who suffered fatal injuries when he was crushed by a heavy steel screen. The screen was being spray-painted in the yard of Bradley Brothers, glass and colour merchants, at the corner of Peterborough and Colombo streets, on Monday afternoon. The inquest wss adjourned sine die after evidence of identification had been given. With another man Mr Clarkson was working in the yard of the firm spraying the screen, which is to be used for the Cobb river hydro-electric scheme. The men were swinging the screen, which weighs one and a half tons, by means of a hand chain hoist, when one of the links of the chain snapped. Mr Clarkson was unable to jump clear and was crushed against some packing cases when the screen fell. He was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital soon after 3 p.m. and died soon after arrival.

Mr Clarkson was married, with four young children.

CYCLIST INJURED

When her bicycle was involved in a collision with a car between Hargood and Johns streets, Linwood, early last evening. Miss P. Lake, a young woman, of 12 Aylesford street, suffered head injuries. She was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, where her condition was reported to be fairly satisfactory last evening.
