BRITISH GOLF TITLE
FRANK STRANAHAN WINS (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. May 27. Frank Stranahan, an American, won the British amateur golf title to-day by beating Dick Chapmaij. another American. 8 and 6. Stranahan won the title in 1948. „ Difficult wet conditions and slowmotion play marred the final at St. Andrew’s. In the morning round Stranahan, who was out in 40, to his opponent's 41. was one up at the turn. At the thirteenth he had increased his lead to two up, and at the eighteenth was three up. Conditions were slightly better in the second half, but the wind was still strong and cold. Play was a ’ittle faster, but the match (30 holes) took 5 hours and 40 minutes to play. Stranahan won the title with a tremendous drive to within four yards of the green at the 316-yards thirteenth hole, a delicate chip and a single putt.
