ROADS TO COAST CLOSED
SLIPS AND WASH OUTS The Automobile Association (Canterbury) issued a bulletin late last i evening warning motorists that ‘ Arthur’s Pass would probably be ' closed for several days at least. The Lewis Pass was also closed last night, but there was a prospect of this road being open to-day if the weather clears ; and repairs can be made. “It doesn’t make much difference i where the trouble is. The road is i blocked and that is all about it,” said I the association’s chief patrol officer (Mr ■ L. D. Pickles) when asked if he had ; any details about the Arthur’s Pass ! road blockages. “The trouble seems to I begin about Cass, and from there on I there are slips, washouts and flooded I creeks.” he said. “I heard that a readman had to leave his truck at Bealey ; and get back lo Cass on foot. ■ “In the Lewis Pass the Public Works ' Department was towing some cars through; but early issued a request : that others should be stopped. I under- ' stand that the trouble there is more from swollen creeks than from slips.” There were unconfirmed reports that the Buller gorge road was also blocked.
