Encircle May Win First Race

VICTORY SONG IN FORM FOR FENDALTON HANDICAP The early favourite, Fourth Brigade, has been withdrawn from the Addington Handicap, the first race at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington to-day. In his absence, Encircle, Globe Son, Bashaw, and Concord may divide the prize-money. By a successful sire of trotters in Quite Sure, Encircle, which is out of a winner at the trotting gait in Within, showed his best form this season when he beat Sure Jinks and Fourth Brigade in the Miramar Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting at Hutt Park on April 29. Now a five-year-old, Encircle, which is trained at Leeston by W. J. Doyle, who has a splendid record with trotters, may eventually develop into a high-class performer. Globe Son and Bashaw were seen at their best at the Oamaru meeting on May 13 when, after giving away long starts, they finished second and third to Rear Light in the Ascot Vale Handicap. Better placed to-day, they should be handy all the way. Concord and Rowan MfCoy, which have recent wins to their credit, make most appeal of the others. Lord Grattan has been scratched for the Second Hambletonian Handicap, the faster class for trotters. Finale, which has gained five wins in his last eight starts, must be conceded a good chance. Finale is bracketed with a recent winner in Daredevil, which has the ability to win in the best company once he settles down to race solidly. The combination should be popular with investors. The track has been specially prepared, and it should provide fast going.

The double will be run on the i Winter Handicap and the Ellesmere: Handicap. With horses of the calibre of Bonny Scott. Good Review. Nebula, Parawa Derby. Systematic, Right Royal. British Machine. County Antrim, Islaburn Lass, and Prince Hall included in the field: the Winter Handicap, the main event for pagers, should prove an exciting contest. - The New Brighton-trained Nebula should be well suited by the mile and five furlongs distance. A quick beemne. she may lead all the way. Parawa Derby, one of J. B. Pringle's team, has shown splendid form to gain five wins and eight placings this season. A place-getfer in heavy going at Epsom last Saturday, Parawa Derby should be hard to beat if he has taken no harm from the trip. G. S. Smith's bracket, Systematic and Right Royal, and County Antrim, from L. O. Thomas's team, have all been working well at Addington. They should be handy to Nebula and Parawa Derby at the finish. Tactician and Hemisphere, which were both winners at»Oamaru recently, will probably dispute favouritism in the Ellesmere Handicap, which has ■ attracted a field of "30 improving i pacers. Besides Tactician and Hemisphere. other recent place-getters in Scotch Drift. Trouville. Artless. ■ Curiosity, and Landlight may carry L solid support. Minor Events Te Maru, a winner at his last two starts. Will probably be backed down to a short price in the Peninsula Handicap. A three-year-old Sandydale colt, he should gradu- j ate to the best classes under the guidance of M. Holmes. If he is patiently handled. Van Dieman, the winner of two races earlier in the season, may prove the hardest for Te Maru to beat. Of the others. Preston. Morano. Piccolo, and Eileen Lillian appear to have the best prospects. Vivanti. a nippy daughter of Bronze Eagle and Malapert, has shown outstanding form this season to gain two wins and a second. Although she is handicapped to give away a 24 yards start to most of the field, she is one of the favourites for the Juvenile Handicap, the feature event for I two-year-olds. If he leaves the mark smartly. Flag- j ship, which has worked particularly well . at Addington for V. Alborn. should have vivanti doing her best all the way. I Kapeen and Johnnv Globe, which have | both been racing well, look the best of i . the others. Victory Song’s list of five wins this season is a testimonial to her ability. Her record entitles her to be sent out favourite for the Fendalton Handicap. With recent winners including Kevmaster. Tutta Bella. Peggydale. Te Arawhata. Uranium, and Hilda Scott included in the field. Victory Song will need to be at her best J. B. Pringle will parade a strong . in Lady Averil and Parawa Derbv. end they will probably be sent out favourite for the Final Handicap. An interesting acceptor is Gay Knight, which was operated on for wind trouble after finishing second in his two races Carlier in the season. His form will be followed with interest. Big fields are carded, and the racing should be full of interest throughout the day. Selections are:— Addington Handicap: Encircle, Globe Son. Bashaw. Peninsula Handicap: Te Maru, Van Dietnan. Morano. Winter Handicap: Nebula, Parawa Derby. Systematic-Right Royal bracket. Juvenile Handicap: Vivanti, Flagship. Kapeen. Ellesmere Handicap: Tactician. Hemisphere. Scotch Drift. Second Hambletonian Handicap: Finale, Casameter, Roderick Dhu. Fendalton Handicap: Victory Song, Te Arawhata. Victory Dale. Final Handicap: Lady Averil-Parawa Derby bracket, Gantree, Right RoyalTrustee bracket. The following is the programme: 10.45 a.m.—
