DEATH OF VISCOUNT WAVELL
MESSAGE SENT BY MR HOLLAND (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 26. The Prime Minister (Mr Holland) has sent the following message to the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations: “His Majesty’s Government in New Zealand has learned with deep regret of the death of Viscount Wavell of Cyrenaica and Winchester, and extend their sincere sympathy to the Government and people of the United Kingdom and particularly to the immediate members of Viscount Wavell's family. The New Zealand Government and people will always cherish a warm and deep appreciation of the outstanding services rendered by Viscount Wavell in the military field, especially in the campaigns in North Africa, when New Zealand forces served under his command. They recall also with gratitude his distinguished service both to the Commonwealth and the Empire during the time he held office as Viceroy of India.”
