FRIENDS OF ST. HELENS
ANNUAL MEETING The 13th annual meeting of the Friends of St. Helens was held at St Helens Hospital yesterday. Mrs A Sandston presided. For the parcels committee, Mrs E. Friedlander said that in the last three years. 348 parcels of a value of £217 had been sent to Britain and that a new list of persons deserving of help had been received from the almoner of Queen Charlotte Hospital. London. Mrs Friedlander acknowledged her debt to Mrs W. Hobbs in preparing parcels for posting. The m atron (Miss E. Sparkes) thanked the Friends of St. Helens for their interest in the hospital and said that the clothing, magazines, newspapers and equipment thev had provided had been greatly appreciated by the patients and staff. ‘‘You are doing a valuable work.” said Miss Sparkes. “We find that when the need foi’ your help relaxes in one direction, new avenues open and you are always ready.” The guest speaker was Dr. L. C. L. Averill, who commended the work of the group and hoped they would continue their interest in the new St. Helens. He thought the help of members in the gardens there would be valuable. Members found his description of his recent visit to hospitals in Australia most interesting. It was decided to send letters of sympathy to Mrs McCaw and Miss A. Buckley, who recently suffered bereavements. Sympathy was also expressed with Mrs Blair, who has been ill, with Mrs W. S. Bean, who became ill on her way to England, and with Mrs Arthur Rose, whose husband is ill. It was decided that a letter be sent to Mrs H. S. Feast expressing members’ pleasure at her recovery from her recent illness. Officers elected were as follows: patron. Mr Peter Fraser: vice-patron, Mrs Bean; president. Mrs Sandston; honorary secretary, Mrs J. Lorimer: honorary treasurer, Mrs Rose; assistant honorary secretary and treasurer. Miss H. Nottingham; vice-presidents. 13 were elected; committee. Mesdames L. C. L. Averill. Friedlander. Hobbs. H. Wyatt. Stewart Hunter, C. T. Hand Newton. G. H. Watts. Feast, H. Sturge, Snowden. T. Fletcher Telford, Gardner Miller. R. M. Macfarlane. A. J. Jones. L. McCaw, D. Orchard. J. S. Neville. Dr. Helen Field. Misses T. West-Watson, E. Tod, M. E. Jones. H. Nottingham; delegates to National Council of Women. Mesdames Averill and Hobbs; auditor. Mr P. C. Browne.
