CATCHMENT HOARDS
Sir, —And so Mr Stalker, not being able to prove his rash and inaccurate statements, wants me to help him. It is a pity his bias outweighed his discretion. Our engineer’s reports show that they are now engaged on clearing the Halswell river for the third time in 12 months. The lower part from the lake to Blake’s road is proceeding, and the upper part, Tai Tapu-Lansdowne, will have the weeds cut following on. The gauges show this river to be one foot lower and carrying more water than normal for many years. The Springs County has expressed itself as happy with its useful and economical contract with bur board for the higher maintenance of its watercourses. Certain people in Mr Stalker’s district are sour with us because we refuse to undertake their responsibilities with public funds. We should be sorry to seem him join them.—Yours, etc., WM. MACHIN. Chairman. North Canterbury Catchment Board. May 25, 1950.
