CLIFTON BAY MEMORIAL
Sir, —The Sumner borough memorial cairn being erected at Clifton Bay is not properly a centennial affair. Why at Clifton anyway? Did the council ever meet here? But something centennially notable did occur here. In 1849 Canterbury surveyors built their store here—the first building in Sumner. In 1849 George Day brought his family from Day's Bay in his self-built schooner Flirt, and built his house alongside the store—the first house built in Sumner. This became the Canterbury Arms, a shelter to many, notably to Fitz Gerald’s august procession after the Sumner road opening ceremony. Day sounded the estuary channels. The Flirt was the first decked vessel to cross the bar. Many a pilgrim’s goods were conveyed up both rivers. Day became pilot and flew signals on Cave Rock. A centennial tablet should be erected at Clifton Bay. The borough memorial is in the wrong place.—Yours, etc., R. R. D. MILLIGAN. May 24, 1950,
