CANTERBURY PARK CLUB

TROTTING

Nebula May Win Winter Handicap

LADY AVERIL IN FORM FOR FINAL HANDICAP

With a high-class field of evenly-matched horses, including recent place-getters in Nebula, Bonny Scott, Parawa Derby, Right Royal, British Machine,' County Antrim, Islaburn Lass,, and Prince Hall engaged, investors will be set a hard task to select the winner of the Winter Handicap, the first leg of the double at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Addington to-morrow.

Nebula may be the favourite. A racy-looking daughter of Red Shadow and Omihi, Nebula, which is trained at New Brighton by A. J. Motz, has been placed in eight races this season. Nebula’s first nine races this season yielded a win. two seconds, and a third. Taken to the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on February 25, Nebula showed that she was above the average when she beat Hall Ace and Liliaceac after leading all the way in the Visitors’ Handicap. At the same club’s meeting on March 4, she confirmed the good impression formed of her by beating Vigilant and Vedette after leading all the way in the Army Handicap. Her two wins in her four starts since then include a half head victory over Real Scott after leading all the way in the Flying Handicap at the Easter meeting at Addington. The merit of this effort is emphasised by Real Scott’s record of four wins in his four starts since then.

With Nebula, which accelerates quickly, starting from scratch, the Winter Handicap should be run at a fast pace.

The track has dried out after the recent rain, and it should be at its best to-morrow.

Luck in the scramble for good positions in the early stages may play an important part in the result of the second leg of the double, the Ellesmere Handicap, which has attracted a field of 30 improving pacers. On recent form. Tactician, Hemisphere, Artless. Desert Flight, and Scotch Drift may carry most support. One of M. C. McTigue’s Methven team. Tactician is an impressive four-year-old son of Springfield Globe and Berengaria, which is a sister of winners in Vimy Ridge. Plunder Bar, Indigo and West Point. Tactician gained his third win for the season when, at his last start, he decisively beat Joan McKinney in the George Bruce Memorial Handicap at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on May 13. On that form. Tactician must, be respected from the scratch mark in the Ellesmere Handicap. The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator: Addington Handicap. Scots Fusilier and Rakautika: Peninsula Handicap. Best Globe and Mischief, Eileen Lillian and Shy Sonoma, Maori Queen and Secundus, Velvet Brown and Realm Again; Winter Handicap. Systematic and Right Royal: Juvenile Handicap, Safeguard and Taradale; Ellesmere Handicap,

i Double Deck and Trouville, Emblazon i and Robin Adair, Ipso Facto and Wee 1 Logan, Kopara Lass. Alcove, and Re--1 light; Second Hambletonian Handicap, ■ Daredevil and Finale. Mamanuas and I Billy McElwyn; Fendalton Handicap. ■ Hilda Scott and Carisbrook; Final i Handicap, Lady Averil and Parawa > Derby, Trustee and Right Royal. ; Big fields and the racing i should be exciting throughout the day. I Selections are:— ■ ‘Addington Handicap: Fourth Brigade, i Encircle. Globe Son. I Peninsula Handicap: Te Maru, Van Dieman. Morano. Winter Handicap: Nebula, SystematicRight Royal bracket, County Antrim. Juveni’e Handicap: Vivanti, Flagship, Kapeen i Ellesmere Handicap: Tactician. Hemisphere, Scotch Drift. Second Hambletonian Handicap: Finale, I Casameter, Lord Grattan. I Fendalton Handicap: Victory Song, Te I Arawhata, Victory Dale. II Final Handicap: Lady Averil-Parawa Derby bracket, Gantree, Right RoyalTrustee bracket. 10.45 a.m.— ADDINGTON HANDICAP.

Fourth Brigade, which has gained two wins, a second, and a third in his last four starts, will probably be sent out favourite for the Addington Handicap. On recent form, most opposition to him may come from Encircle. Sure Jinks, Bashaw, Globe Son. and Rowan McCoy. A son of Quite Sure and Within, Encircle, which is bred to win in the best • company, gave a solid performance at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting on April 29 to beat Sure Jinks and Fourth Brigade in the Miramar Handicap. On that display. Encircle should keep Fourth Brigade doing his best all the way in the Addington Handicap. Rowan McCoy, the winner of the Waikaura Handicap, and Globe Son and Bashaw, which finished second and third to Rear Light after giving away long starts in the Ascot Vale Handicap at the Oamaru winter meeting, may be in the picture with Fourth Brigade and Encircle at the finish of the Addington Handicap. 11.28 a.m.—

Return (4) 12 „ The three-year-olds, Te Maru, Van Die- . man. Preston, and Morano may prove too ' good for the older horses in the Penin- ' sula Handicap. The consistent Sandydale colt. Te Maru, has been placed in eight i of his 10 races this season, his last two starts yielding a win in the Trial Handii cap No. 2, and in the F. G. Plunket Stakes at the Oamaru winter meeting. Te Maru appears to be improving with each race, and he should win the first prize of £325 for Mr A. Woods, for whom he is trained and driven by M. Holmes. Van Dieman. which won two races earlier in the season in fine style, disappointed in the F. G. Plunket Stakes at Oamaru. With the race run to suit him, Van Dieman may atone for that display with a good performance to-morrow. | Morano’s third placing to Te Maru and Preston in the F. G. Plunket Stakes was full of merit. He has worked well at Addihgton since then, and he should be at his best to-morrow. I Eileen Lillian, Mystery Dillon, and Piccolo make most appeal of the others. I 12.13 p.m.—

i Nebula, Parawa Derby, Systematic, and Bonny Scott make most appeal of the horses on scratch in the Winter Handicap. ■ Parawa Derby, which has some fine perI formances to his credit this season, raced I well at Epsom last week to finish second to Real Scott in the C. F. Mark Memorial I Handicap. If he has not been affected by ! the trip. Parawa Derby should finish in a place to-morrow. Systematic, which is bracketed with a recent winner in Right Royal, and Bonny Scott, have both been working nicely at Addington. They should both race well. On the form they have shown this season. there is little between the backmarkers. British Machine. County Antrim, Prince Hall, and Islaburn Lass. Prince v Hall, which is beginning more quickly in ■ his races, and County Antrim, which has | worked particularly well at Addington

this week, may have the best chances. They should be handy to Nebula and Systematic at the finish.

Vivanti’s wins in.the Welcome Stakes at the Easter meeting at Addington, and in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes at the Oamaru Trotting Club's winter meeting have earned her a 24 yards penalty in the Juvenile Handicap, but this may not prevent her winning if C. C. Devine can manoeuvre her clear of. trouble in the big field as she is a high-class filly. Flagship, which finished third in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes; Kapeen, a place-

getter in his two races for J. Grice, who trains him at Tinwald; and Johnny Globe, which has raced well for a win, two seconds. and a fourth in his four races; and Ohio, a half brother by Springfield Globe to a fine performer in Young Charles, may be the hardest for Vivanti to beat. 1.13 p.m.— ELLESMERE HANDICAP,

Tactician gave the impression that he i was a high-class pacer in the making when he finished strongly to win the George Bruce Memorial Handicap at i Oamaru on May 13. He may find the Ellesmere Handicap a stepping-stone to much better company. Scotch Drift, Trouville, and Artless I look the best of the horses on scratch ; with Tactician. A winner at Reefton last , week, Scotch Drift may carry on to good company for R. G. Cameron, who is training him at New Brighton. Of those further back in the handicaps, Hemisphere, Curosity, Birthstone, Desert Flight, Landlight, Sandy Ridge, and Phyllis Gold appear to have the best prospects. The winner of the C. L. Ayson Handicap at Oamaru on May 6, Hemisphere, which will be driven by D. C. Watts, should eventually take a tight mark for V. Leeming, who trains him at Prebbleton.

Finale’s record of five wins and three minor placings in his last eight starts attracts attention to his prospects in the Second Hambletonian Handicap. Cne of C. R. Berkett’s Templeton team, Finale is now at the top of his form, and he may pay a dividend. Lord Grattan and Roderick Dhu, which were both placed at their last start, are nicely placed on scratch with Finale, and they should be handy all the way. Of the horses on handicap marks, Casameter, which will start from 48 yards with other good performers in Bold Salute, Signal Light, and Two Step, appeals strongly. If J. D. Litten has him at his best, he should be prominent with Finale and Lord Grattan at the finish. 3.13 p.m.—

(1) 36 The six-year-old Light Brigade* mare, Victory Song, gained her fifth win for the season when, at her last start, she gained an easy win over Statesman in the Beach Handicap at Forbury Park on April 22.

If she races up to that form Victory Song should have little difficulty in adding the Fendalton Handicap to her record. Other likely types in the field include Keymaster, a winner at Forbury Park at his last start; Te Arawhata, and Peggydale, which were both winners at the Oamaru winter meeting: Uranium, a-win-ner at Epsom recently; and Victory Dale, a consistent performer for the Oamaru trainer, J. M; Bain. 3.58 p.m.—

J. B. Pringle will parade a strong bracket in Lady Averil and Parawa Derby in the Final Handicap, and the, combination should prove popular. A Dillon Hall mare. Lady Averil gained her eleventh . minor placing for the season when, at | her last start, she finished second to l Right Royal in the Farewell Handicap iat the Forbury Park Trotting Club's i meeting on April 29. She would need to show little improvement to gain an over- < due win for Mr R. Lewis. ' Gantree. which gave a good display at ■. his last start to finish second to Gough's i Pride in the Easter Handicap at Addingi ton on April 8, has worked well at Addington this week. He may dispute favouritism with Lady Averil and Parawa Derby. Islaburn Lass, Prince Hall, and Right Royal have all been racing well. They may fill the minor places. Ashburton T.C. Withdrawals Withdrawals for the first day of the Ashburton meeting are due nc-t later than 5 p.m. on Monday, 29th instant. —Advt.
